This Challenge is to swim sufficient lengths at Chagford Pool between now and 5pm on Sunday 13th September, to cover the distance from Coombe Martin in North Devon to Lyme Regis in East Devon. According to the Southwest Coast Path guide the distance is 355km.
The pool length is 34m so 10,441 lengths are needed! The Challenge can be divided into:
- North Devon, Coombe Martin to Marsland Mouth which is 138km (4059 lengths),
- South Devon, Plymouth to Starcross, 167km (4912 lengths),
- East Devon, Exmouth to Lyme Regis 50km (1471 lengths).
How far can we achieve by 5pm on sunday 13th september?
Can we complete the North, South and East coasts?
We need swimmers to participate and every length swum will be counted towards the cumulative total. Participants will be able to notify us during the challenge so there can be regular updates of how far we have swum. All lengths will be valuable, few or many!
By undertaking the challenge we hope that funds can be raised for the pool by asking participants to gain sponsorship for their overall effort or a specific number of lengths – their choice. Registration will be on-line through this website and sponsorship / donations through JustGiving. Length counting will be on an ‘Honesty’ basis by each participant.
Support by donation alone is also available as participation in swimming at Chagford Pool in these strange times may not be possible for some people. And we will not be able to have any audience thanks to COVID!

The Pool Committee has achieved wonders in opening the pool this year even though it is for limited use due to COVID restrictions. Opening in late July has meant that this season will be very short. Added to this, each session is limited to a reduced number of swimmers. The overall income for this season has been badly affected and there are always running costs to be covered.
The Pool is a very important local resource normally used by all ages from babies upward, locals (including the local school) and visitors. It is used for serious swimming to playing in the toddler pool – swim teaching, physical and mental health, recuperation, social gathering and so on! And a cup of tea too!
Fundraising events run by the Committee usually help to towards financing capital projects, maintenance and replacements. Understandably, none of these events have been held this year but we have this wonderful resource and a surprising number of swimmers enjoying it now!
So, can YOU help to achieve this Challenge?
By being involved you would be supporting the pool through this very difficult year and, hopefully, help it to be in a stronger position for the start of the 2021 season.
